The cause of palpitations cannot be determined by sensation alone. If accompanied by fainting or near-fainting, persistent chest pain, significant shortness of breath, altered consciousness, or if symptoms suddenly appear and progressively worsen, contact emergency services immediately; even if symptoms have resolved, record the time, duration, and activity at onset, and consult a doctor as soon as possible.
