Record when the swelling started, whether it is on one side or both sides, whether it is gradually worsening, and whether it is accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain, weight changes, or decreased exercise tolerance. Do not use diuretics on your own or massage areas that are obviously painful and swollen. Contact your doctor as soon as possible; sudden severe symptoms require emergency medical attention.
